Why me? Why NOT me!?

weight lossI have written several articles on here about the importance of your mindset when you are trying to lose weight. Wrong thinking can undermine your weight-loss efforts, ending up in more disappointment. Most of us have some faulty thoughts, no matter how positive we try to be. Some negative thoughts are disguised as positive language, but if you look deep down, it is not really that positive.

Let’s take a look at some of the faulty mindsets that affect us:

Defeatist Thoughts

When you feel that you have to take a harmful appetite suppressant to lose weight, you are shifting the responsibility for poor lifestyle habits away from yourself. Another defeatist attitude is accepting that being overweight is in your genes and can’t be changed.

Many people are losing weight by using self-empowering thoughts and good nutrition.

Labeling Yourself

Using words like “ugly”, “fat” and “sloppy” to describe yourself  causes you to live by those labels.  These labels break down your self-confidence and you then become the label instead of the person you were meant to be.

Thinking Frustration

Changing your lifestyle, eating healthier and exercising require discipline. It is the lack of discipline which has got you to the place where you are at. Trying for a while and failing over and over can easily lead to frustration. This is how you learn to avoid frustration by not trying at all. So the cycle repeats itself over and over again.

Go Big or Don’t Go at All Thinking

When you get on the scale and again you did not lose as much weight as you had hoped, you say to yourself:

“I am working so hard at this, but I am not losing any weight. I am wasting my time.”

This comes with a whole set of negative self-talk.  It reactivates unwanted behavior and causes more damage.

There is nothing wrong with still enjoying a small piece of cake, but this mindset leads to binge eating. This is the very thought-process which causes alcoholics and drug addicts to relapse.

Unrealistic Goals

Who doesn’t want to look like a celebrity? Well, me. Yes, they are beautiful – on paper. But they spend hours in the gym every day. They follow unrealistic diets and take dangerous prescription drugs. But that’s not even enough. Their photos have to be enhanced to make them look like they do on television and in magazines.

Extreme Obsessions

Do you say these things to yourself?

If I don’t lose weight now, I never will.

My husband will leave me if I gain weight.

If I eat that one small piece of chocolate I will gain 20lbs.

It is essential to understand that our everyday circumstances are ordinary and not to exaggerate them. Everyone has small slipups every day, but the key to success is in how we handle it.  Using this type of self-talk does more harm than good. Yes, you won’t eat any chocolate or cake or fattening  foods, but is it really sustainable?  For most of us, no. However, by thinking about a small indulgence (provided you keep it small) realistically and enjoying it as such will stop it from turning into a catastrophy.

Learn four steps to manifesting weight loss right now.

Friday Take-Away

Remember, you don’t lose weight because you have super-human self-control. You lose weight by being disciplined despite being a human being who enjoys the sweet things in life. It is about moderation and enjoying your food. You can’t lose weight when you feel deprived as your efforts are blocked by negative and disempowering thoughts.

Make the decision today to change your mindset and change your life.

Depression is caused by happy meals

fast food depressionI love fast food as much (or even more) than most people. Most of us understand that fast food makes us fat, but are you aware of the fact that it can lead to depression?

Research on  9,000 people determined that fast food is not good for mental health

Pizzas, hot dogs and hamburgers are not only nutritionally void, but they also tend to make people more miserable, if not depressed. The study revealed that more than 50% of the subjects were depressed after eating this type of food.

Most people who frequently eat  fast food are more likely than their peers to:

  • smoke,
  • live sedentary lives
  • work more than 45 hours a week

and are unmarried.

Nearly 500 of the subjects in the research group of close to nine thousand were diagnosed with clinical depression and needed to be prescribed anti-depressants. None of the subjects used in the trial had any obesity-related diseases, nor were they are on a particularly high or low-calorie diet.

Another researcher made the claim that commercially baked foods can also cause depression.Even small amounts of baked breads, pastries, biscuits and cakes can lead to depression. While more studies are necessary to validate this finding, it is well known that baked foods have other serious implications on health, including obesity.

Not only do fast food junkies have to contend with increased risk of stroke, obesity and diabetes, they now have to struggle with depression and possible suicidal ideation. The problem is even further exacerbated when they start taking anti-depressants.

Ironically, these medications lead to further depression and even suicide

The package inserts of anti-depressants clearly list around 70 different side effects. Some of them have a hundred or more dangerous side effects. Suicide is a prominent side effect associated with taking these drugs.

It is difficult to determine whether the depression or the fast food is to blame

Obese people certainly have a predisposition to depression, however it is unclear whether the bad food choices are causing the depression.

There is certainly a correlation between fast food and depression

Obese people often use food and fast food in particular as an escape from some issue. This is why it is wise to address that issue and embark on a weight-management program simultaneously. This two-pronged approach will help to get back into shape, and the new-found self-esteem will go a long way towards becoming a happier and depression-free person.

Menopause: CHANGE of life, not END of life

I read a great article earlier. We all try to stay young, but I suppose aging is inevitable. It’s how we deal with it that matters.

The pressures of daily life and the fact that there are more pollutants, less nutrients in our food, fast food diets, too little exercise, etc. add to the fact that we experience everything ‘worse’ than years ago.

I’ve spoken to a few women who are or have been going through menopause and the general consensus is that it need not be feared.

What is menopause?

Many women become pre-menopausal 2-10 years before becoming menopausal (Some women as young as 26 become peri-menopausal due to hormone imbalances and other medical conditions but that’s a different topic altogether).

Dr. Luigi talks about Woman’s Choice – a product that supports comfort and well-being for women during monthly hormonal fluctuations and menopause, in just one tablet per day.

At this juncture in life, they experience mood swings, night sweats and hot flushes and even depression. Even worse for many of these women, is that the weight starts to creep up to unacceptable levels and much of this weight ends up around the waist.

Menopausal women have slower metabolisms

This means that it takes longer for them to convert the food into energy during menopause.

  • Cut back on your portions and make healthier food choices.
  • Instead of eating fats and simple sugars, rather opt for vegetables and fruits.
  • Protein and fiber are also good food choices if you want to keep the unwanted weight at bay.
  • If you go to a restaurant, order a starter portion or share a main portion with your partner.

Menopause is not too late to start exercising

Running, cycling, walking and swimming are the exercises of choice for women going through menopause. These exercises are geared to build muscle strength, and this will happen even at this age.

You may have to work a bit harder to lose the weight and become fitter while you are menopausal.  Begin with about 30 minutes a day five times per week. As you shed weight and fitter, you can increase the duration of the exercise and the intensity of the exercise. Building muscle will burn more calories than fat.

Keep yourself moving.

Once you sit down, you turn off your fat release enzymes. After forty, these enzymes are less efficient at helping you to shed the pounds.

The best way around this is to keep on the move as much as possible.

  • Stand while talking on the phone. you will burn more calories in that fifteen minutes than you will while sitting and chatting on the phone.
  • If you have a sedentary job, get up every hour or so and move about.
  • Try working out on an exercise bicycle while watching TV as you burn very little calories while slouching on the couch watching reruns of twenty-year-old TV shows.

The mental element of Menopause is equally important

It is an inevitable process of life and we all have to go through it. Millions of women have experienced menopause and millions more will experienced it. Just like pregnancy is a normal process of life, so is menopause.

Here’s a great video on how to deal with the emotional aspects.

Heart Attacks: NO more heart disease with Nitric Oxide (with video)

heart diseaseIn America, it is reported that about 800, 000 people have heart attacks for the first time every year. Sadly, warning signs are diminishing especially in women younger than 45.

This means that there are many people walking around with diseased coronary arteries without even realizing it.

Research was conducted on more than a million patients between 1994 and 2006 from mote than 2000 hospitals. The results were overwhelming as many of the patients did not experience the typical symptoms of a heart attack.

Along with chest pain some of the other symptoms included nausea, indigestion, fatigue and or weakness, shortness of breath or back, jaw or arm pain.

The question begs how many people have experienced these symptoms, have had a cardiac event and do not know that they have diseased coronary arteries?

More women than men present with atypical heart attacks,  without the traditional  symptoms

After the age of 55, these figures level out and the risk is the same for both sexes. Rising medical insurance and medical costs prohibit many people from accessing suitable treatment these days. This is why there has been a shift in people taking responsibility for their own health.

Apart from  looking after your health by maintaining healthy weight levels, eating right and getting enough exercise, what else can you do to avoid a life-threatening heart attack?

Dr Lou Ignarro, Nobel award winner for his work in medical science believes that increasing the Nitric Oxide in your body will go a long way towards achieving this objective. Nitric Oxide is a gaseous molecule which the cells in your body produce. When Nitric Oxide is released into your bloodstream, your body is sent messages to open up the capillaries and blood vessels in order to allow adequate blood and oxygen flow to your heart, lungs and other organs.

This process also delivers much-needed nutrients to various parts of your body. Nitric Oxide is the reason why patients diagnosed with coronary artery disease are prescribed nitroglycerine as this medication helps the body to produce Nitric Oxide quickly. This happens as the Nitric Oxide opens up the arteriesquicker than normal, allowing blood and oxygen flow to take place within the body.

Nitric Oxide improves the overall functioning of your cells within your body

The longer this gas is present in your body the better your organs and various systems will function. One of the main functions of Nitric Oxide is to prevent platelets from forming clots; this will result in a lower incidence of heart attacks in people. It also helps to expunge waste products from the cells within your body.

Nitric Oxide retards the process of accumulating plaque in your arteries

Dr Ignarro is so passionate about his findings regarding Nitric Oxide, that he believes the end of ischemic heart disease is nigh. It has even been shown that people with healthy amounts of Nitric Oxidein their bodies, have normal cholesterol levels.

Dr Ignarro has developed Niteworks which helps to increase the production of Nitric Oxide in the body

Niteworks is not only for people who have had heart attacks, but also for those who want to prevent the onset thereof. Since it boosts the amount of oxygen to the cells, it is a great energy and alertness booster for everyone as we can all benefit from taking it.

Diabetes drugs causing more harm than good

diabetesThe worst thing anyone can do is to take medication for a condition, and the medication actually exacerbates the condition. Did you know that certain anti-depressant drugs make depressed people suicidal?

Statin drugs have a similar effect on people with high cholesterol and diabetes. Hypercholesterolemia and diabetes are two illnesses that obese people suffer from. So when an obese person takes statin drugs, they immediately become at risk for developing diabetes.

The risk of contracting diabetes due to statin drugs is serious enough for the FDA to take action

Many other governments, however, does not seem to be that concerned. The medical fraternity still sees fit to prescribe these harmful medications despite all the publicity regarding the dangers of taking certain medications.

The truth is that conditions such as diabetes and certain types of depression can be managed effectively by making some lifestyle changes

Diabetes is rampant today in the western world because of the Western diet of fast foods, lack of exercise and other silly food choices. Experts agree that a balanced diet is most effective for improving good health, wellness and weight loss.

A diet of mainly fatty and sugary foods is bound to cause people to end up with diabetes, so cut these foods out, or at the very least, cut back on the amount of these foods that you consume daily.

(Look at how your breakfast affects your day, health and your weight)

Make sure that you start the day off with a healthy breakfast that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. This will keep you feeling fuller for longer and will help you to avoid the insulin spiking that is so common when you eat foods that are rich in simple carbohydrates.

When snacking throughout the day, make sure that you make healthy choices. Snacking on fruit or a carrot will be much more beneficial than buns, scones and the like.

If you have any excess weight to lose, then do so.

Be careful to select a good weight management program that will keep you satisfied and be nutritionally sound. The worst thing that you can do is take products to lose weight that cause you to compromise your nutritional needs. As a diabetic, it is important that you get the best nutrition possible.
