Understanding Protein & How to Incorporate it in Your Diet for Best Weight Loss Results

proteinBefore I get going with this post on Protein – I just want to tell all the GF fans that we have a SUPER EXCITING post coming up tomorrow…. So stay tuned!

If you don’t understand all the complicated healthy terms about amino acids, proteins, gluten, metabolism and artificial this and that, don’t feel bad. We all learn together and as we learn new things, we will share it with you in terms us normal people understand too.

Today we’re talking about protein. I know we talk about that a lot but that’s only because it is so important for good health and weight loss.

Protein is made up of long chains of amino acids, and the body requires this  in order to function properly

Protein is the body’s building blocks

There are 22 amino acids – eight of them are essential and the other fourteen are non-essential amino acids. The body produces the non-essential acids, and we do not need to consume these.

The other eight do need to be consumed in the food we eat. The body recreates these proteins after they are broken down into amino acids, which are absorbed into the body so that new proteins can be created.

In order for our bodies to perform at optimum levels, it is necessary to consume protein from a number of sources

Poultry, shellfish, eggs and dairy products are good sources of protein as they contain all the eight essential amino acids. Nuts, grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits contain incomplete proteins. This is why it is good to eat balanced meals that contain all protein types in order to obtain all the amino acids.

Certain protein-rich foods are high in saturated fats

Be careful not to eat too many of these food types. Rather look for low-fat options.

  • Skim milk and cottage cheese are better options than full cream milk and cheddar cheese.
  • Beans and peanut butter are good sources of complete protein.
  • Eggs are great as they contain the most amount of essential amino acids.
  • Fish is a lean protein and is therefore, a good source of protein. Most people lose this benefit by crumbing or battering the fish, rather look for a nice baked fish recipe.
  • Fish also contains essential fatty acids, which are good for you.

By eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, it is possible to negate the harmful effects that high saturated foods have. While animal protein is good for us, there is a risk of developing high cholesterol so stock up on fruits and vegetables instead.

Our bodies lose protein daily, therefore it is necessary to replenish every day

Protein-rich foods contain important nutrients such as iron, without which we cannot function. Protein helps our bodies to create new muscles, enzymes, hormones, organ tissues and cells. It is rather easy to see why protein is so important.

To lose weight fast and effectively, you need to increase our intake of protein

The more weight we have to lose, the higher protein factor.

Lizette & I have noticed that by increasing our protein intake, not only have we lost weight quicker, but we have firmed up significantly. This is without any exercise whatsoever.

A breakfast that is high in protein will keep us satiated for much longer and helps to keep blood sugar regulated for longer too. If you do get the urge to snack, look for something that is rich in protein. This could include a quality protein powder, an egg, seeds, nuts or a protein bar.

Fiber: Benefits of psyllium husk

psyllium huskFiber has so many benefits to it and yet still people do not get enough of it in their daily diets. Apart from creating a feeling of fullness(which helps to keep the appetite at bay), it is useful for a whole pile other reasons. If you are constipated, take fiber as this will get you sorted out in no time. Fiber has also been used to manage diverticulosis and to assist in preventing cancer of the colon and it is helpful in many  instances of digestive conditions.

One form of fiber is psyllium husk, and it is natural unrelated to wheat. Psyllium yields about 60-70 % soluble fiber, which is eight times more than that of oat bran. This fiber helps to absorb water, and that produces softer faeces. In India, there is Blond Psyllium and America produces Plantago Ovata.

The mucilage of the seed is coated with husk of Psyllium. This is considered to be the purest form of dietary fiber and only this is used when Psyllium products are manufactured. It contains choline, vitamin B1, polysaccharides, proteins and glycosides. The seed contains Linoleic Acid, and this is an important fatty acid required for good health. The husk is made up of a complex carbohydrate which is also contained in vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

Indian people have used Psyllium for thousands of years to bring about healing. Cystitis, constipation, hemorrhoids and diarrhea are just some of the ailments that have been effectively treated with this dietary fiber. Psyllium is known to promote regular bowel movement and this can help to avoid cystitis (in some cases, cystitis can be due to fecal matter that migrates up the urethra).

A mixture of tumeric, milk and Psyllium has been used for centuries by people in India to treat minor scrapes and cuts. It also helps to manage inflammation of cell membranes.

If you consume Psyllium regularly, you are less likely to have toxins in your body. The Psyllium creates a gelatinous and spongy mass by absorbing water and swelling to about fifty times its size. This helps to move and break down the toxic matter in the bowel. It aids the process of peristalsis to happen and that gets rid of bacteria, which thrive on fecal matter. The sooner the toxins and fecal matter are removed from the body, the less likely that illness will set in.

Here’s what Wikipedia says:

Psyllium seed husks also known as ispaghulaisabgol, or psyllium, are portions of the seedsof the plant Plantago ovata, (genus Plantago), a native of India. They are hygroscopic (that is they absorb water expanding and become mucilaginousAyurveda recommends its use for colon cleansing/ bowel regulation as well as for better blood circulation.

Psyllium seed husk are indigestible and are a source of soluble dietary fiber. They are used to relieve constipationirritable bowel syndrome, and diarrhea. They are also used as a regular dietary supplement to improve and maintain regular GI transit. The inert bulk of the husks helps provide a constant volume of solid material irrespective of other aspects of the diet or any disease condition of the gut. Some recent research is also showing them to be promising in lowering cholesterol and controlling diabetes.[1]

Other uses include gluten-free baking, where ground psyllium seed husks bind moisture and help make the bread less crumbly.

Both our Formula 1 shakes and Fiber & Herb tablets contain psyllium husk.

Gluten Intolerance: When pizza becomes a no-no

gluten freeBeing allergic or intolerant of gluten can be cumbersome as you will have to exclude many foods from your diet. Thankfully, manufacturers have come up with gluten-free alternatives, and you should look out for these when you do your shopping. Be warned though – it can be cumbersome and expensive too.

What is Gluten Intolerance?

If you are gluten intolerant, you may experience  headaches, skin rashes, Crohn’s and celiac disease and even Rheumatoid Arthritis. Symptoms can occur immediately after exposure to gluten-containing foods or even a few days after the fact.

Gluten is a protein that binds the molecules that cause flour to rise when it is being baked. Gluten is found in rye, bulgur, triticale, spelt, barley, kamut, seminola and wheat.

Processed meats as they are riddled with gluten

You run the risk of developing cancer (due to the preservatives) and arthritis if you are gluten intolerant. Pate, salami, bologna, sausages, hot dogs, liverwurst and cold cuts all contain this harmful protein for those who are intolerant of gluten.

Certain alcohol contains gluten

This includes liquors made from grains, beer and light ale. It is wise to tread carefully with regards to alcohol if you are unable to tolerate gluten.

Certain seasonings and condiments contain gluten so steer clear of them if possible. Gluten based floor, wheat thickened gravies, malt, barley, bouillon, modified starch, MSG and Worcestershire sauce. Luckily, there are gluten-free alternatives available, so be sure to shop around so that you can still add flavor to your food when cooking. If you prefer natural seasonings, use fresh herbs, garlic, lemon and pepper.

Pastries, waffles, spaghetti, pretzels, buns, doughnuts, vermicelli, cornbread, rye bread, pumpernickel, pies, pancake mix, dumplings, wheat germ, bran, ice cream cones, tortillas made from wheat; noodles, fried foods, pita, rolls, biscuits, bread crumbs, croutons, gravy, cake, cookies, bagels, muffins, cereal, bread and pasta all contain gluten. Many of these foods are available gluten free, so again look at the labels before you buy.

Lizette tells her results.

I have a moderate gluten intolerance that taunted me for many years. To make matters worse, I love baked goodies, sweets, pasta and processed meats. Eating a pizza would have me in agony for at least 12 hours and I would have to take a migraine cocktail before eating garlic (which I love too).

After 2 months of intense suffering and tearful pledges to never eat anything ever again, I started on Herbalife shakes to replace 2 meals a day.

I have had absolutely no gluten intolerance issues since I have been doing that, despite eating gluten rich foods daily. In fact – I enjoyed a huge wheat-based pizza with processed meats, cheese and a heap of garlic on Saturday with absolutely no problem.

Got my life back!!!
