blood sugarQuality food feeds not only the body, but also the spirit

When the spirit is fed, the body stays satisfied for longer. If you tend to be “hungry” all day, it could be that you are just not eating food that makes you feel good. When you feel good, you lose weight.

I’ve experimented with this for a long time now and have proven it not only to myself but to my kids and to Wade (who was a tough hard nut to crack).

If you don’t believe me, do the food experiment for yourself

Next time you eat a donut, fries, bread, a pie or pizza (simple carbs) with toxic energy drinks, take note of how you feel afterwards. I agree, it tastes amazing in the moment, but you are bound to feel lethargic and sluggish half hour later.

But if you eat something a little healthier such as a salad, fruit, digestive crackers, cheese or eggs, you will not only enjoy it at the time, but also feel sustained energy later on.

The reason for this is that all the “fun” foods rate high on the glycemic index charts and therefore play havoc with the blood sugar levels. Better food choices tend to keep the levels on an even keel, which helps to sustain energy levels and prevent sudden spikes and dips.

Colorful food is great for the soul

When it comes to presentation, color is key. The brighter the food, the better it is for you. (Yes, many candies are very colorful… I know – but that doesn’t count! We are talking fruits & veg here!)  :-)

Protein is a great feel-good food

Protein is great for weight loss and it also keeps you fuller for longer. It is easy to incorporate protein into meals by adding nuts, eggs, lean meat cuts, peanut butter and beans to the meals.

If you have a sweet tooth, you should consider replacing one or two meals with a protein shake.

High protein snacks are also great for in-between meals and nuts or protein bars are tasty and ideal.  The right kinds are low GI, meaning they will sustain your blood sugar levels for longer. These snacks will also help to prevent unhealthy between-meals snacking and therefore it will help manage your weight better.

This is how a Formula 1 shake feeds the soul and body

It is obvious from this chart that a protein shake is the best way to feed your body for sustained energy.
